  7.     O.K., so Today is the oldest daily program on network
  8. television, but did this justify a 40th-year fete that seemed
  9. to run that long? NBC's garrulous celebration culminated last
  10. week with a look back to those halcyon days when no one had ever
  11. heard of something called Good Morning America. Endless archival
  12. footage, an anniversary show and a prime-time special proved
  13. that there are duller things than a PBS pledge drive. But amid
  14. the pitiless plugola came some refreshing lunacy: Bill Cosby in
  15. the fright wig and free-form facial hair of critic Gene Shalit.
  16. This made up for the cowboy who compared his horses to the Today
  17. show hosts. A little.
